Dead Memory Interview with Kyle Keck and Chris "Murph" Marth
Questions by Brian Barnhart
What made you guys decide to make a comeback for 2009?
Stauf - People still had an intres in d.m. and people were still asking how they could get thaig hands on d.m. suff. i honestly procrastanated doing it again, but then i fgured fuck it i did miss doing it and having at as some thing to do design wise. and having some thing else todo with my spare time.
Murph - Well me and Stauf have been talking about it for awhile but it was just to hard to do without help....our full time jobs really started to affect the amount of work we were able to accomplish...when me and stauff decided to get with keck to do distribution for us there was no reason why we could not come back for 2009....on top of that we were having a really hard time with printers, now we have like a inhouse printer with malony and Trievel (Axelrad) which works out great for us....kids were still asking about it after our year and a half break so the decision to make a comeback was easy for us....plus face it, the amount of good clothing companies out there today is waffer.
Can each of you describe what your current roles and/or responsibilities are at Dead Memory?
Stauf - talking on the phone with murph,.just trying to keep intouch with wats going on his side of things and mine. im pretty scater brained and this helps me to ,us,to be on the same page.i also design alot of the shirts and try too come up with ideas for new cloths and other things.
Murph - My role at DM is running the online store.....other then that i like to do a lot of team stuff...now a days a do alot less then what i used too because we have keck as our distributor now...without his help it would be too hard for us....more or less any decision made about anything to do with DEAD MEMORY is decided by me and stauffer.
Your team consists of some pretty raw dudes. Is there anything you look for when deciding on the riders?
stauf - yeah,i guess. i think our team consits of people were frends with and respect as our friends first, before how good they are on bikes. it just so happens tehy are all amazing riders. most of the team was formed dy just all of us hanging out as friends.and then when d.m. was started. we wanted them to be apart of it with us.
Murph - yeah our team is a bunch of fucking apes...there is only one thing we look for in our sacred brotherhood....they must be a SICKMAN!!!!
DM has always had some rad designs, who is responsible for the designs and is there a certain theme you go for when coming up with the designs?
stauf - i do alot, but also have alot of help from matt treivel at axlrad. he is the man when it comes to designing things , and photo shop,he is a true wizard.
Murph - As far as the designs go that is more stauf's area....i try to help him on them as much as i can but that was never my thing....stauff is good at making new designs so i usually trust with what he comes up with.....mr. trievel helps us out with designs too.
Most of the products on your website right now, are "oldies-but-goodies", can we expect some fresh designs soon?
stauf - yeah we totaly have lots of new ideas.were gonna do alot of limited runs of things, shirts, and acessories. wiz has been telling me about some ideas he has for shirts.tht sound pretty intresting as you can imagine. i really cant wait to get on all this shit. its gonna take a little time to get back fully on our feet again.but fuck it,one step at a time .
Murph - yeah we kinda have a fresh start going....kids love the old designs but they won't be around too long yet...we plan on doing all new designs...maybe bring one of the old designs out every once and awhile....we have 3 new ones out now which i think are some of the best designs we have done yet.
Do you plan on expanding or enhancing the current website?
stauf - ahhh,yeah .
Murph - yeah once we get our feet on the ground again we have plans for alot of new things to do.
Is there any meaning behind the name “Dead Memory”?
no not really. i wanted to call it just plain memory. but it was kinda missing some thing.and one day me and doug folke were talking , jokeing about how all the companies at that time had skulls and like death overtones too them. not that thats bad becase i know we have our fair share of some of that shit in our stuff. so any way i just said deadmemory out loud . and that was it. put the dead before the memory.
Any plans for a DM team road trip this year, if so, where to?
stauf - yeah i,we would love too. every one on the team loves traveling, and i personaly love traveling with them its always an interesting experianec. but i dont know were to yet.
Murph - definently...not sure where to, but the last one was fun even with all the rain and another one must happen...we will must likely go in the direction of warm weather.
Dead Memory has some deep roots in the PA trail scene, any comments on the current state of trail riding?
Murph - i'm pretty much out of the loop ever since NAM(r.i.p.) was taken from us....i do know that CATTY is fuckin rad and kids need to support it by buying nuss's vids (pawoods.com), getting a limited CATTY shirt (axelradarmy.com) or just sending them money....they have a good thing going on down there and they can use any little bit of help they can get.
What do your guys do outside of running Dead Memory?
stauf - i like riding still, but i also picked up fishing and camping i do that alot in the summer. i think it s good to have hoobies outside of bmx.
Murph - well with my full time job i'm a union carpenter....i like to work on my house that i bought...chillin with my two dogs...trails were always a big part of my life but i have not got to ride much in the past year or so but i will be back on it this summer for sure.
Any plans to do any DM advertisements?
stuaf - yeah were working on some wright now.that should be on the come up soon.
Murph - more than that.
The "Shutter Speed" videos had a high presence of the Dead Memory crew. I think most people who saw those videos were really psyched on them. Any word of another release from Shutter Speed?
Murph - i wish....i think it would be hard to get doug the slug out of retirement....we will be calling on him to do our vid.
What about a Dead Memory team video?
stauf - hopefully. one step at a time.
Murph - oh yeah...i've been wanting to do a DM video forever...it will go down in the future.....this team is so out of hand a vid would be rediculous.
Thanks?
stauf - murh, kyle keck and the rest of the team.and everyone who has kept intrest in d.m. thanks
Murph - i would have to start with my bro STAUFFER...KYLE KECK for being or distro. and for all the other help he does for us....MALONY and TRIEVEL (axelrad) for saving us from printer hell....THE 2009 DEADMEMORY TEAM and the SACRED BROTHERHOOD for riding and supporting our clothing even though some of them our larger then life these days.....MCM at SOURCE BIKE SHOP and LARRY(B.R.) at ACTION WHEELS for always carrying DM....JAIME MOORE at STOWAWAY DISTRO. for taking care of us again over in Austrailia...JOHN DYE with BICYCLE UNION...of course MR. B for the interview....CHRIS JANIS for always helping me out.....ANY BIKE SHOP AND OVER SEAS DISTRO. THAT EVER CARRIED DEAD MEMORY...EVERYONE WHO HELPS US AND SUPPORTS THE DM TAKEOVER, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE....of course MY FAMILY.
